The Pelican is a ponderous bird, seeming almost too large to fly. With wing spans of 108" (American White Pelican) and 79" (Brown Pelican), Pelicans in flight are a sight to behold.

Did you know White Pelicans preparing for a journey will leave a foraging area one or two at a time, almost at timed intervals. Soaring high, they will circle until all members have joined the flock before departing.

 
~ Among the oldest on record -- a Brown Pelican who lived to be over 31 years of age. ~
